I added a layer of 1/4 pegboard on top of the slats. The holes in the pegboard allow the mattress to still breathe while giving better support than the slats. If youre mattress has individual pocket coils, you definitely need a better foundation than just the slats. Do what I did and use some cheap pegboard.
Also, I dabbed a little thread locker onto the bolts before tightening everything together.
