After putting the bed together sideways and backwards (trial error)but I got it together the first try was harder but after wemnt smoothlyI would definitely recommend separate ladder designed for bunk beds or just a regular sturdy ladder the rungs on this frame dont seem designed to be climbed up and down (not from what I can tell) so I got my daughter a ladder and I also believe will keep the sturdiness of the bed intact other than that it is great product and a wonderful price. Its awesome product
