Teenagers can sleep on these (a really big guy might feel like its cramped and I question whether the top will truly hold a 400 lb personmaybe with a bunkie board added? ) but this is a regular twin and my kids ranging 16-22 (110 lbs - 150 lbs) will definitely be able to bring their friends up and have extra beds. I put a regular twin mattress on top and a 6 memory foam mattress on the bottom bunk and its comfortable.
