First, let me say that this is real wood, and it is a SOFT wood, subject to dings and scratches. My two year old was "helping" me and my husband put this together with his little pretend screwdriver and wooden wrench, and made some dings on the wood... oh well.
Secondly, the allen wrench that comes with this set is horrid. Get yourself a better one to build this bed before you get too far. Makes all the difference.
Besides these things, I LOVE THIS BED. Sturdy, beautiful, and easy to put together if you follow the instructions.
The instructions specifically state using a "6 inch mattress" for both beds.
