I suspect its the lacquer/paint thats giving off a toxic plume of odors. If you have someone who is sensitive to paint fumes I suggest you avoid this piece. Everyone else should wipe down all surfaces, thats easy to do prior to assembly. Other than that issue, its a great little piece for the price.
