Even though the product is marketed for children ages 4 through teens, in my opinion this bed can also work for young single adults (like me) with a limited living space such as a college dorm or small apartment. Do not be deceived by the studio images on the product listing: the childrens toys and preschool under the bed in the staged pictures truly dwarf the size of this bed-- the bed is fit for a Twin, and is large enough to quite comfortably fit one adult. I purchased tension curtain rods and 24 curtains to make an elegant bed skirt, and the space underneath I use for storage. I love this bed; because so much fits under it, it saves a ton of space.
The product arrives in a very large, heavy box, so plan ahead to have assistance with bringing it to your desired room. The directions made setup pretty easy, which was a relief; I used a power drill for the screws, but many of the fasteners are designed for an Allen wrench/hex key (included). This bed is not designed to be used with a box spring, so if you have a box spring you will need to dispose of it. The wood on the bed frame scratches very easily; hard pressure from your own thumbnail will leave an indentation in the wood. The bed is sturdy when used properly, but it would not safely withstand being jumped on, roughhousing/wrestling, or any other activities beyond sleeping. Overall I highly recommend this product.
The manufacturer notes that the weight limit on the upper part of the bed is 165lbs. I had concerns about that before buying, because, assuming that that figure includes the weight of the mattress, that leaves not much weight for a person. I weigh 155lbs and feel very secure using this bed. Also, the manufacturer states that the consumers mattress must not exceed 6 in height. My mattress comes to about 7 and it works just fine. The railings measure 13.5 high from the crossbeams under the mattress.
Here is an excerpt from the warnings on the product that would be helpful to have had on the listing:
Maximum weight on upper part of bed: 165 lbs. Do not allow horseplay on or under the bed and prohibit jumping on the bed. Do not allow children under four years of age to use the upper bunk. Bed is designed for children ranging from 4 years of age to teenagers. Use only coil spring mattresses on the upper bunk. Failure to do so can result in injury. Use only mattresses which are 74 - 75 long, 37.5 - 38.5 wide on bed. Ensure thickness of mattress does not exceed 6.
I love this bed.
