Attractive functional, easy to assemble, wafer thin laminate
This lift top coffee table is well packaged in a box within a box. The instructions are easy to follow this goes together pretty easily. All you need is 2 screwdrivers, a Phillips head and a short flat head. You can use a longer flat head but need the stubby one when tightening the cams between the top bottom shelf. As the Styrofoam was getting all over the place I decided to assemble this outside.
The main body of the coffee table is already assembled. Basically the assembly consists of attaching the bottom shelf, divider the sides.
The shelves are made of loose spaced particle board. When assembling you only want to use hand tools as it is very easy to strip the holes when screwing in the posts, even by hand, only tighten until the posts are seated. The laminate surface is paper thin was already coming off on 1 corner. Fortunately this corner is hidden where it attached to the side, but this does reveal more of how durable this will be (not very in my opinion).
The holes for the wooden dowels are drilled pretty deep so they are used more as guide pins when putting the parts together then anything structural. Some were a bit tight fitting as they should be where others were very loose. One post hole was loose enough for me to tighten all the way by hand spin in place. When tightening the cams around these posts to pull the parts together, you want to be careful listen for the wood breaking stop when you hear that (happened on a few of the cams). As this is not very dense particle board, that is to be expected.
The majority of the assembly is done with the table upside down. You need to tighten the last 4 cams for the tops of the sides with the top of table open.
Once assembled this does look good. The top movement up down is a little tight but that is a good thing. There is storage space with the top open for remotes, movies, small books or magines. There is additional space on the lower open shelf. The attached feet are a hard plastic.
The stated weight limits for this coffee table are 55 lbs with the top up open, plenty to hold your meal or snacks while you and a friend are watching TV. When closed this is listed at 143 lbs. Plenty of you are going to use against the wall to hold your TV or with books decorations in front of your sofa but please dont sit on the table unless you are a small child.
I am not sure how well this will hold up with teenage boys rumbustious dogs. A good bump or scrape will remove some of the super thin laminate the included touch up marker (wrong color for this table) wont be able to repair that.
