Box spring may not be needed but plywood is if using a foam mattress.

Mine arrived with a couple of medium size 1 1/4 deep gouges (one on the exterior end rail and one on the interior side rail) that appear to have occurred during the manufacturing process. Gouges were painted over. Nice clean, pretty look. Good value for 69.90 shipped. There was a small ding on the inside bottom rail but no big deal since its unnoticeable when fully assembled. Took 25 minutes to assemble. A rubber mallet is recommended to knock some pieces to fit into each other but dont knock too hard on the s. Im not sure how sturdy the welds are. One of the side rails did not fit easily into the corner piece so some paint was shaved off when pushing it in to fit. Im laying a 9 foam mattress onto the s but am also putting plywood onto of those s. Theres 6/7 of space between the s. Bunky boards are usually 2 thick so will rise to high on the 1/2 space between top of frame and s so mattress wont stay in place. I wish the manufacturer would use the wide side of the s to be positioned horizontally vs. vertically in the frame. There may be a engineering reason that Im not aware of. The 18 tall frame is ideal for people 53 and up if they want to roll in/out of bed easily.
