It is easy to assemble but you have to pay attention. Avoid cross threading the screws! For each screw, after the first couple of turns, wiggle the screw a bit to make sure it is still a little loose. If it is not loose, you may be cross threading it and if you keep tightening you can damage the threads and make it stuck half way. Luckily I was about to fix my mistake but many people will not have the right tools to fix the mistake.
Other than having to be careful, assembly is easy. I cannot read a word of Japanese but the diagrams in the instructions were enough for me to understand what to do. Only suggestion I have for is to create an English language version of the instructions available. (Can even be as a downloadable PDF instead of printed).
How the two halves are connected together is a bit questionable. Basically, the two halves are held onto the middle connector legs by 2 screws (on each half). The screws are oriented vertically, so that means all the stress is on the little bit of wood that is held on to by the head of the screw. Itll hold a sleeping person but I would not recommend jumping on it!
I was hoping this was made in Japan but I saw that it is made in China. It is still good quality but the sanding of the wood is not smooth. Other than that, it is well made. The high price may be due to shipping from Japan to USA via DHL.
