It doesnt need a box spring, but Ive found I like to bring the height up a little by having a box spring under my mattress and this frame is strong enough to hold both. It also gives it a more hefty look. This design has an excellent weight load capacity. Perfect guest bed for us. Can hold up to a lot of movement and stress. I also love having a bit of storage space underneath.
