Sturdy and heavy because its metal. Its not too tall for our 6 year old and she can get in and out with ease. There is a small rise/lip so she wont roll out (thankfully)/ so dont get a super thick mattress. She loves the area underneath which we turned into a reading nook. Im happy with my purchase
