UPDATE: So here we are 4 years later, basically the bed is falling apart. The screws come out, the metal bracket that holds the boards in for the mattress support have completely stripped out and the bed fell in. No activity was going on just sleeping. So Yes the bed is nice, but dont expect to own if for more than a few years. I would think we could have gotten at least 10 years out of it.
So I see a lot of complaints on the quality of the bed. I think the quality is fine. No it isnt solid hardwood but it looks nice and the bed is very durable.
My husband and I are normal sized people and we have had no problems with the bed at all.
The time it took to put together was a lot longer than expected but we wanted to ensure that the bed was put together properly. We had no problem with the drawers at all. We purchased and put this bed together over two months ago. All of the drawers work great. If you find that they arent on the tracks properly it is because your bed is not straight. My husband used a level to insure that all corners were 90 degree angles before putting the drawers in.
It is a great bed and you truly cannot beat the price. We are looking to purchase another one soon for our guest room.
Fake finish scrapes easily when you are trying to vacuum around it and the stupid drawers are really cheap! Especially the bottoms. They have you staple on the cardboard on the bottoms but if you fill up the drawer (especially with jeans) the staples will bust out and leave the cardboard to drag when you try to open and close it. My husband has had to put small finish nails in most of my drawers now to keep them sturdy so I would just recommend doing that to begin with and save yourself the hassle later. After that is done to the drawers they cant break as easily from the weight of shirts or jeans. We have a small house and our small closet and one dresser wasnt enough and two dressers in the room just wasnt working for space so I decided to get this bed to use the drawers as my dresser. Other than the problems mentioned above its worked for what I intended. The price is a bit high for the quality (or lack of) that you are getting. The bed is also VERY heavy once the mattress is put on so if you arent sure where you want it in the room make sure to figure that out without the mattress on it and it takes two people to move not matter what and practically two to put together unless you want it to take you forever. So 3 stars, its just ok.
I got it cheaper because the packaging was damaged. I was able to assembly alone by hand in 2 hours. the drawers are light but very sturdy if you use all the nails and supports that the instructions call for. this is also one of the only wooden frames i can find that fit a twin xl and I am immensely pleased. Its really nice finally having a bed again
Unit is well made and looks great and is very functional. Read many negative reviews on this brand of unit but if youre patient and follow instruction you will have no problem. this is a heavy and sable unit once it is put together. I highly recommend a power screw/driverit will save your hand and arm. We ae very happy with this unit.
Item arrived in heavy duty packaging to prevent damage. Took about 3 hours to put it together. Nice and sturdy construction.
Comes in three cartons so it looks overwhelming, but it isnt as bad as it appears to put together.
I read the review and took a chance with this bed, the frame is nice and looks good and the drawers do to but when assembling them it seems like this batch of right side drawer tracks are off by some degree because each drawer has a slant in that direction and is opened at the right side and flush on the left. I took it apart and switched out some parts but it was still the same. May have gotten a bad sample but this is an issue.
Girlfriend moved into a smaller place and lost closet space. This bed saved the day, easy to put together and enjoyed a few beers and some building time.
I bought this for my guest bedroom. I would not purchase it for rambunctious children that like to jump on furniture, for everyday use for myself, or for very amorous adults. However, for the occasional visitor and my cats, it is perfect. This is not high end furniture and probably would not hold up for 20 years of use (unless you are like me with need only for a few days out of each year).
It is laminated MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard glued sawdust). Off gassing will occur. It did have some minor flaws, so I placed the flawed pieces in the least noticeable position in the room. Count your pieces before you start and READ the directions. If you are familiar with the materials and the instructions, you will save time. It is unlikely that you will have extra pieces.
It was easy to put together and I did most of it myself. Im an accountant, not a contractor (but my Dad taught me a lot about construction and power tools). I did recruit some assistance in making sure the frame was squared off, but that was it. The only remotely challenging part was getting the bolts to go in correctly when attaching the headboard and foot board to the side supports. Patience and diligence paid off.
Helpful hints / You will need a screw driver, hammer, and a drill. I used a drill with a driver bit for the screws (there are between 200 and 300 of them). Make sure that the frame is square before and after you attach the foot board (To do this, measure top right to bottom left diagonally, and measure top left to bottom right diagonally. When both measurements match, the frame is square). This will REALLY help the drawers line up correctly when installed. Buy some extra screws! I put 78 total extra screws in this bed and it wont be squeaking or moving in any direction. Screw the slats down to the center supports (18, 1 8 screws). This will keep them from moving or making any unnecessary noise. Seriously consider adding ? plywood over the slats. This will keep things in your drawers nice and clean. I sanded, primed and painted the plywood before I screwed it down to the slats and caulked around the edges (12, 1 8 screws). No slivers for this girl when changing the linens. I also used L brackets to attach the plywood to the headboard and foot board for additional support on the ends (six L brackets, 24, 6 screws / make sure not to use anything longer or they may poke through the laminate). Lastly, I used screws (instead of using the nails provided) when attaching the bottom of each drawer to the backs (24, 8 screws). I put stick on plastic bumpers on the top corners of each drawer to keep them from banging on the bed frame.
Once made up, you wont see much of the bed. It is functional, adds some extra storage (and who doesnt need that), and looks nice. It allowed me to put a Queen sized bed in a relatively small room due to the small foot print of the bed. Im going to make my own upholstered headboard and will attach it to the wall. Im quite happy with this purchase.

Good value at the price
It has held up well so far. Manufactured precisely, and not too difficult to assemble. about 2 or 3 hours.
Somoma Bed
Nice and compact. Easy to put together. Looks great in the bedroom and it makes the room look crisp and clean.
