We purchased the six-person Evanston tent for two reasons:
a) We wanted a bigger tent for hosting other people, and
b) We wanted a comfortable, bug-free place for our dogs to hang out in, since theyre particularly sleepy.
We took it camping for the first time yesterday. So far, so good. Note: the weather was perfect, so we have not tested it in the rain. Its large enough for two people and two large dogs (greyhounds with especially long legs), so it will accommodate four people comfortably. I wouldnt recommend six people.
Pros:
1. Without the rainfly, theres a lot of great natural light. The top half of the back panel is entirely a window without a zip-up shade, so if you need more privacy, youll have to put on the rainfly.
2. Its easy to set up, and very attractive. It took the two of us about 10 minutes to set it up the first time. The rods are even color-coded, so you know which one to use with the porch, and which ones to use with the main portion of the tent.
3. Its spacious. We had a queen-sized air mattress on one side, and bedding for our dogs on the other. There was more than enough room.
4. The screened porch was fantastic, especially for our dogs. They could sit in this area comfortably and watch us around the fire without being eaten by bugs. They REALLY enjoyed it (see photo). It can fit about two camp chairs as well. Its also worth noting that the door to the main portion of the tent is like any other normal, exterior door for a tent, so in nice weather it feels like it has two rooms.
5. This is the largest tent weve ever owned, and we were concerned it may not fit in the trunk of our car, a Toyota Camry, along with all of our other camping equipment. Fortunately, it does!
Cons:
1. Its difficult to fit back in its bag. We will probably buy a larger duffle bag for it.
2. Because of the way the zippers meet on the front porch, theres no lip to keep debris from being blown/tracked in when the zippers are unzipped. This isnt necessarily a big deal, but I was glad we had brought a dustpan.
3. As other reviewers have noted, the porch will clearly get soaked in bad weather. Its entirely open, which is lovely on a beautiful day, but the rainfly does not cover it. Luckily, at least seems to have anticipated this, and has provided a small mesh opening on the floor of the porch under the door, allowing water to drain without bugs getting in. Theyve also elevated the main door of the tent, so that any collecting water on the porch would not affect the sleeping quarters. It seems well conceived, but we will provide an update as soon as we test the tent in the rain.
Overall, this is a wonderful tent. Stay tuned for updates!
Bought this as a gift for my son family, the first time they used it they got caught in a big storm. They stayed perfectly dry inside. The attached porch area got a little water but everything else was fine. My son said it was a breeze to put up take down and there was more than enough room for two adults, two kids and a twin queen sized air mattress. Very pleased with the quality and performance of this item. Great packaging and delivered right on time. Good to see brand is still turning out a quality product.
Very nice tent. Easy to pitch, less than 10 minutes (amazing since we are novices at tent camping). The screen room is handy, not extremely large, but adequate for a couple of chairs and a small table. The tent and the screened area have a bucket floor. We had no issues with insects coming in through the window screens or the top of the tent. The center is tall enough for those 6 -63 to stand up. Easily handles a queen size bed, equipment and a large dog crate with room to spare. This might be able to accommodate 2 queens, but it would be a bit tight. No true cons for the tent, except it should be rated for 3 seasons, not winter. Our nighttime temps dipped to around 50 degrees and we were very comfortable. I did not notice an electric port either, but it may have one. This held up great in 30-40 mph winds, cant speak to rain resistance since we had none.We like the fit of the rain fly also, not loose at all. Very happy with this purchase - it looks good, its roomy and above all, its very easy and quick to set up.
Took the tent camping again-this time it rained-3 days of rain! The sleeping area of the tent stayed dry, but the screened porch actually flooded as rain poured in through the screened sides. We still like the tent, but really should supply rain flaps for the screened area.
This tent is great! I love the front screened area. It really cuts down on bug intrusion. There is a ton of space especially if you are camping with just one other person. The set up wasnt too tough. Overall it is a great tent, especially since I got it on lightening deal for an awesome price!
Very nice tent. Really like the front screened section. Acts as an additional barrier to keep bugs (mosquitos) out of main tent when entering or exiting. Rained one night and not a drop inside. Bought during lightning deal for great price.
We took this tent camping at Paint Creek State Park in southern Ohio. The first night we set it up, we faced 45+ MPH winds and torrential rains. The tent stayed relatively dry (excluding the screened in porch area, but that should be a little obvious). Setup can be a little aggravating due to the poles snagging in the snag-free sleeves but overall Im pleased with the purchase. The tent is nice and roomy inside. Definitely recommend.
Great product. Fairly easy for 2 people to assemble together. Large enough for 2 kids cots and a queen blow up mattress. The screened porch was perfect for hanging out at dark and not getting eaten by bugs.
This is a good family camping tent for MILD weather. It has a vestibule that is perfect for letting your baby or toddler play in, or for getting out of the rain but still being able to watch it, or a mud room......HOWEVER. The ENTIRE rear of the tent is open!!!! Its just netting just like the Windows, but you cant cover it! The only way to cover it is to always put the rain guard on. What a pain. Thats my only complaint.
This tent is awesome. I set it up with just myself and my son (11, he just held the poles still for me). It was really simple and easy to set up. Literally 2 poles for the main cabin, one for the porch, and one for the rain guard. Couldnt ask for an easier tent set up. Took maybe 15 minutes and this was the first set up. The room in this thing is incredible. I can stand up (56) with plenty of room. Take down was just as easy. The bag actually has a bit of an expandable bottom, which is great since a tent never gets rolled up the same as the factory! Two thumbs up from me!
Pretty easy to put up, a lot larger than I thought it was going to be but not a problem because some ones tent always breaks on a camping trip so the extra room is great!
